Dorothy Browns is a boutique theatre touted by movie-goers as the best in New Zealand.
Screening a selection of contemporary and arthouse films, and boasting an expertly curated bookstore, Dorothy’s has something for everyone. There’s even a roaring fire and silent films on the balcony in the winter months!
Founding owner Philippa Archibald looked to old-time movie culture for inspiration. “I wanted to create a night out for movie-goers where people don’t feel they have to rush.” Having intermissions in the Main Theatre adds to the charm.
Plush seating with armrests for cheeseboards and wineglasses are warm and comfy, and our fully stocked bar serves fine local wines and craft beer.
Open 7 days (closed Christmas Day)
Doors open 30 minutes prior to the first session of the day and close at approximately 9:30pm - please check the session times on our website
The Main Theatre has a removable seat for wheelchair access, and The Den can comfortably seat a wheelchair next to our front-row couch. Wheelchair access to the cinema is best done via the drop-off area on Arrow Lane - the Dorothy's double-door entrance is down a short alley from there,
