This 15km walk, bike or 4WD from Arrowtown takes you to one of the New Zealand’s best-preserved gold mining towns hidden in the high country near Arrowtown.
Starting near Dudley’s Cottage Precinct, the trail goes upstream beside the Arrow River following an old horse and dray road. There are multiple river crossings (sometimes knee deep or higher in places) so check the weather before you go and be prepared.
The trail slopes gently upwards through the picturesque river gorge passing derelict huts and an old homestead along the way. While you’re in Macetown, explore the remains and head up the valley to the Homeward Bound Stamper Battery. Bring camping equipment with you to stay the night in the free, but basic, DOC campsite – just make sure you leave nothing behind.
Note: 4WD vehicles should not go in alone. The river can rise rapidly when raining and is not recommended to be accessed during the winter months.
