The much photographed historic Police Hut was built in 1863 and is the oldest wooden structure in Arrowtown. It was constructed from pit-sawn red beech and had hand-cut shakes on the roof.
It originally was part of a police camp in Cardigan Street and was moved to its present site in 1991. The exact use of the building isn’t known, but it is suspected to have been used for storing gold during the gold rush.
The Arrowtown Charitable Trust and the Lakes District Museum have worked with the community to restore the hut for use as an interpretation site. Step inside and find lots of information about the Mahu Whenua backcountry behind Arrowtown and the native flora and fauna.
