The loop trail around Lake Hayes (Waiwhakaata) offers stunning mountain and lake views, and you are often rewarded with incredible mountain reflections on the calm lake surface. The circuit is popular with cyclists of all abilities, as well as runners and walkers.
The trail includes a boardwalk protecting local wildlife, historic cottages, and a close-up view of some of the area’s most notable homes. The trail can be narrow in sections with steep drop offs down to the lake but it isn’t a technical trail and families walk and bike the trail.
Note: If you are taking a dog, please keep them on a leash around the wetlands area as it is one of the few sites you can observe the Australasian Crested Grebe.
