Biking

Arrowtown is surrounded by epic bike trails including the famous “Queenstown” Trail

Whether you are a leisure biker, e-biker, a beginner or a seasoned pro, there is a track or trail for you in Arrowtown and its spectacular surrounds. Arrowtown is the main get-on get-off hub on the famous 110km Queenstown Trail. There are world class rides past mountains, lakes and rivers. Several of New Zealand’s most attractive bike trails depart from Arrowtown and many walking trails are also cycling trails. You can start and finish your biking adventure in Arrowtown, or else base yourself here for a few days to sample more. Options include a gentle road ride around the historic town, a fast and steep single track, or a relaxing ride through to Gibbston Valley sampling the many wineries enroute.

One of these rides is the popular Lake Hayes Loop through Millbrook Resort and around the lake. With cafes and art galleries along the way, you can make this scenic 16 km ride a full day adventure. Lake Hayes is quite shallow and provides the region’s warmest swimming – its sandy beach and shaded parkland at the Arrowtown end of the lake is a popular place for cyclists to take a dip and picnic.

Biking safely

There are a few things to do to make your biking experience a great one. In New Zealand you need to wear a helmet while riding a bike, and high-visibility clothing is recommended for low light conditions. Where possible, stick to designated bike lanes and trails and let others know your plans. If you’re renting an e-bike, please watch your speed as many trails are shared with walkers, children and dogs. Be aware of your surroundings, respect other trail users, signal your intentions and have fun!
