Nestled in one of Arrowtown’s oldest heritage buildings on Buckingham Street, The Jade & Opal Factory has been the heart of our whānau’s jade carving tradition for over 35 years. Established by Gary Mullings in the 1990s, this whānau-based business is now led by his son, Lee-Roy Mullings (of Ngāti Kahungunu descent), and his grandson, Brad. Renowned for meticulously hand-carved jade pieces and sculptures, the store features traditional Māori designs such as the Toki (adze), Koru (spiral), Hei Matau (fish hook), Porowhita (circle of life), and Pikorua (twist).
Carrying on the whānau tradition, Brad now showcases a range of his father’s carvings, along with works from other skilled carvers across the country, through Arrowtown Stonework. This online platform offers a broader selection of carvings, educational content, and the rich story of greenstone carving, allowing customers worldwide to connect with the unique qualities of jade and pounamu.
The Jade & Opal Factory is celebrated for its large-scale sculptural artworks and beautifully crafted jewellery, with pieces cherished in homes around the world. Visitors are captivated by the deep spiritual and cultural connections embodied in each piece.

Continuing Our Whānau’s Tradition, Online and In-Store
Located in one of Arrowtown’s oldest heritage buildings, our flagship retail store, The Jade & Opal Factory, has been at the heart of our whānau’s jade carving tradition for over 35 years. Led by master carver Lee-Roy Mullings (of Ngāti Kahungunu descent), the business is supported by his wife, Nicola, and son, Brad, who help run the store, allowing Lee-Roy to focus on his craft. With a modern touch, our online store, Arrowtown Stonework, continues this tradition by offering a unique selection of pounamu pendants and bracelets, along with the story of jade carving, to a global audience.
