The Arrow Basin was at the heart of the 1860s gold-rush and gold still can be found in the banks of the Arrow River. If you feel lucky, grab a gold pan and head to the river. The river is just a two-minute walk from town and several stores including the Museum hire gold pans for the day. Some shops have a panning trough to give you the tips and tricks of gold panning, all without getting your toes wet. Gold panning is a fun activity for all ages, and you often see locals and visitors panning in the crystal-clear waters of the Arrow River.
1. Search after a recent rainfall, as gold is likely to have been brought downstream.
2. Search near the riverbank edge as gold may get lodged near rocky outcrops or the riverbank.
3. Dress for the weather – it can get cold standing in the river in the colder months, so ideally you want to wear gumboots (galoshes or wellies) or waterproof shoes.
4. Be patient. It takes time to find gold!
For only $5 you can grab a pan from Lakes District Museum and try your luck! You will get an instruction sheet and you are also welcome to have a look at our instructional video. It’s all about finding the right spot and having a good technique! You can also head to the RAW gold panning trough to try panning without getting wet.
